It is a good a networking opportunity and a chance to get feedback about my art.
What didn't work well at all?
Sometimes the selling price is a little shameful. Sometimes the organization never communicates the selling price or the buyer to the artist, which is counter-productive, as we can help each other.
Sometimes organizations never communicate the purpose or program the sale of the piece will aid.
Truly, I could go on...but over coffee may be better, as I am sure you are already thinking of responses.:)
I agree with Andee...
I never think the exposure is really worth it, and it turns into artists buying other artists work at SUPER LOW prices... Or artists buying their own work back!
I think if people don't know the artists they are bidding on, it's not good for anyone. The artist basically gives the work away, the buyers don't really connect to the art or know what they have, and the charity doesn't raise much money for itself.
Also, I feel like there needs to be STRICT bidding rules, including minimum bid, bid increments (like $10, $25, etc). I was at one last summer (ask me if you really want to know where), and there were multiple pieces with bids of $0.25, etc... Out of disgust I put higher bids on all of them!
Oops! And the answer is Yes (purchased) and Yes (donated)!
I'm sticking with the minimum bid as a rule for all auction donations. See if it works for you!
